One of my new years resolutions was to be better at keeping up on my blog and writing more info on it. I have already go behind so I decided to start today to catch up. I use it as a journal and this year after I printed my blog for the year and am going back through it I really didnt put the details. So I apologize for the length of this post...I just want it all down on paper for future purposes.
On Feb. 1st it was our schools History Fair. The theme this year was "Revolution, Reaction and Reform" the students had to choose a topic that fits the theme and do a presentation about it. They have to make a presentation board and give an oral report about the topic to judges. The judges then score them and they average all the scores together to get a final score. There is a first, second and third place in each division and all the students that get a 90 or higher go to Region History Fair at Snow College. Bailee's topic was "Prohibition." The Revolution was the the excessive drinking that was occuring in America in the 1700-1800's.( 2.5 times more than people drink today) The Reaction was the Temperance groups that started to form and speak out about the evils of alcohol and the Reform was the 18th ammendment that prohibited the sale and manufacture of alcohol in 1920. This became prohibition but it was not a success and it was repealed in 1933 with the 21st ammendment that made alcohol legal again. We did not realize that there was a time limit until the day before. Her original speech was so long, about 20 minutes, and she knew so much information about each aspect that she talked forever. Well she practiced in front of her class and her teacher told her it was too long. The limit for the speech is 5 minutes....oh man, did that throw her for a loop. We spent all night trying to decide what was the most important to talk about and get it down to 5 minutes. She was so flustered when it came time to talk to the judges she could not remember what she was going to say and what she was going to leave out. She came into my room afterwards and was so upset that she did horrible. She said " well don't expect me to go to region, I did awful" She had talked too long and she was all upset because she thought she didn't make sense, trying to cut out information. Well she was pretty sad all day.
Then they announced the winners...it just so happened that she was in my class when they did so I got out my camera because I knew what was about to happen. ( I had been tipped off earlier in the day that she had won but had to keep it a secret for 2 hours)
She tied for 1st place in primary division...and is going to Region.

This was Bailee when she heard her name read as the 1st place winner...she could not believe it. It truely shocked her.
After the shock, I got a wave from her.
The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in her division...
1st place was a tie with Bailee and Vance Stait, 2nd place was Coldir Cox, and 3rd place was Thomas Barrett
She was so happy to see all her effort pay off. She now has to work on getting it to 5 minutes for region. They time you and just stop you at 5 minutes. So we will be practicing a lot. It really is hard to fit 100 years of history and very important info into 5 minutes. I hope we can do it. Needless to say we now know everything you can know about the drunks of America, prohibition and bootlegging and gangsters. I even learned a lot. And the beauty of this kind of report is that she will never forget it.
